Cori - Giardino di Ninfa

Oggi la nostra direzione è verso la meta principale di questo weekend: Giardino di Ninfa. Dopo una colazione ricca e “homemade”, presso il Casale dei Priori, l’Agriturismo dove alloggiamo, ci muoviamo in direzione Cori, un piccolo borgo collinare alle spalle dei monti Lepini, uno dei più antichi e caratteristici comuni della provincia di Latina. Offre diversi scorci del passato e tra questi lo splendido “Tempio d’Ercole” e la Chiesa di Sant Oliva.

Pomeriggio dedicato interamente alla visita guidata al Giardino di Ninfa, un oasi realizzata dalla famiglia Caetani, sulle rovine dell'omonima città medievale, uno splendido esempio di poesia e architettura medievale che sorge ai piedi dei monti Lepini nella provincia di Latina. Definita dal New York Times : "Il giardino più bello e romantico del mondo" . L’antica cittadina, dove oggi sorge l’oasi, ebbe una vita travagliata: spesso contesa da varie casate venne più volte distrutta e ricostruita. Nel 1298 fu acquistata dalla famiglia Caetani e per un centinaio di anni contesa tra questi e i Borgia. Alla fine del 1300 cominciò la decadenza della città a causa soprattutto della malaria. Solo verso la fine dell’800 i Caetani ritornarono sui possedimenti: bonificarono le paludi, estirparono gran parte delle infestanti che ricoprivano i ruderi, piantarono i primi cipressi, lecci, faggi, rose in gran numero, e restaurarono alcune rovine, dando vita ad un giardino in stile anglosassone, dall’aspetto romantico. Oggi l’oasi si presenta come una pittoresca rovina con avanzi di un castello, di palazzi, di chiese, di campanili medievali, il tutto abbracciato da una ricca vegetazione.

Cori - Giardino di Ninfa

Today we are heading towards the main destination of this weekend: Giardino di Ninfa. After a rich and “homemade” breakfast, at the Casale dei Priori, the Agriturismo where we are staying, we move towards Cori, a small hilltop village behind the Lepini mountains, one of the oldest and most characteristic municipalities in the province of Latina. It offers several glimpses of the past and among these the splendid “Temple of Hercules” and the Church of Sant Oliva.

Afternoon dedicated entirely to the guided tour of the Giardino di Ninfa, an oasis created by the Caetani family, on the ruins of the medieval city of the same name, a splendid example of medieval poetry and architecture that stands at the foot of the Lepini mountains in the province of Latina. Defined by the New York Times: "The most beautiful and romantic garden in the world" . The ancient town, where the oasis stands today, had a troubled life: often contested by various families, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times. In 1298 it was purchased by the Caetani family and for a hundred years contested between them and the Borgias. At the end of the 14th century the city began to decline, mainly due to malaria. Only towards the end of the 19th century did the Caetanis return to their possessions: they reclaimed the marshes, uprooted much of the weeds that covered the ruins, planted the first cypresses, holm oaks, beech trees, roses in large numbers, and restored some ruins, giving life to a romantic-looking Anglo-Saxon style garden. Today the oasis appears as a picturesque ruin with the remains of a castle, palaces, churches, medieval bell towers, all surrounded by rich vegetation.
